VNRO X SANRIO
November 2020.
Graphic Patterns / Fashion Collection / Art Direction
SANRIO celebrates its 60th anniversary by connecting its playful universe, led by HELLO KITTY, with the richness of Peruvian culture. This collection brings together Inca symbols, iconic landscapes such as Machu Picchu, El Misti, and Huascarán, and traditional art forms like Mantaro embroidery, alongside Japanese aesthetics influenced by pop artists like Takashi Murakami and Yayoi Kusama.
The collection aims to honor and explore the cultural ties between Japan and Peru, fostering a creative dialogue that highlights the beauty of diversity. By blending tradition and modernity, it seeks to reinterpret and celebrate iconic elements from both cultures, showcasing them as a unified expression of shared heritage.
A central motif in the collection is the use of knots. Japan’s intricate art of cord-knotting for gift wrapping meets the legacy of Peruvian quipus, as well as the works of Peruvian artists like Jorge Eduardo Eielson, symbolizing the interconnectedness of these two cultural traditions.
